CMYK vs Pantone: A Complete Guide to Print Colours

You approved a design on your screen, but when the printed piece lands on your desk the blues look a little dull and the bright pink has shifted towards purple. Sound familiar? This is the single most common surprise in printing, and it comes down to one thing: screens and printers create colour in completely different ways. Understanding the difference is the key to prints that match your brand every single time.

RGB: the colour of screens

Every screen, your phone, laptop and monitor, builds colour from light using three channels: Red, Green and Blue. Mixing light is "additive": add all three at full strength and you get pure white. Because screens emit light, RGB can produce extremely bright, saturated colours, especially vivid greens and electric blues.

The catch is that paper doesn't emit light — it reflects it. So those glowing on-screen colours often can't be reproduced with ink. That's why a design built in RGB can look muted once printed.

CMYK: the colour of print

Printing presses build colour from four inks: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (black) — that's where "CMYK" comes from. Mixing ink is "subtractive": each layer of ink absorbs, or subtracts, light reflecting off the paper. Combine all four and you approach black. Almost every full-colour print job in the world, the flyer in your letterbox, your cereal box, a magazine, is produced in CMYK.

Design tip: always set up your artwork in CMYK from the start. Converting from RGB at the last minute is exactly when colours shift unexpectedly.

Pantone: colour you can guarantee

CMYK is fantastic for photographs and full-colour artwork, but it has a weakness: mixing four inks can vary slightly from press to press and day to day. For brand colours that must be identical everywhere, think of the exact red of a famous soft drink, that variation simply isn't acceptable.

That's where the Pantone Matching System (PMS) comes in. Each Pantone colour is a specific pre-mixed ink with a unique number. Instead of building the colour from four inks, the press uses that one exact ink. The result is perfect, repeatable consistency across every print run, every material and every city.

  • Use CMYK for: photos, full-colour illustrations, most everyday printing
  • Use Pantone for: logos and brand colours that must match exactly, metallics, and fluorescents CMYK can't reproduce
  • Combine both: many premium jobs run CMYK plus one or two Pantone "spot" colours for the logo

Why your print looks different from your screen

Beyond the RGB-to-CMYK gap, a few other culprits cause mismatches:

  1. Uncalibrated monitors. Two screens rarely show the same colour. A calibrated monitor is your closest preview of the printed result.
  2. Paper stock. The same ink looks brighter on glossy coated paper and softer on uncoated or recycled stock, because the surface changes how light reflects.
  3. Lighting. Colours shift under warm indoor light versus daylight. Always judge a proof under neutral light.

How to get perfect colour, every time

You don't need to be a colour scientist. Follow these simple habits and you'll avoid almost every nasty surprise:

  • Build artwork in CMYK, not RGB
  • Specify Pantone numbers for your logo and key brand colours
  • Ask for a physical proof before a large run
  • Keep a printed reference sheet of your approved brand colours
